When it comes to hairdressing competitions, few events capture the imagination quite like the L’Oréal Colour Trophy. This year, Clockwise.film had the thrilling opportunity to create video content for three fashion show VTs for this prestigious event. These videos aren’t just part of the show; at times, they are the show. This offers us a unique chance to flex our creative muscles and push the boundaries of video production. Working on production was our Producer, Rosie Mason-Loader who outlines below the process from shoot to screen. Organising logistics and crew To kick off the pre-production process, our internal team discussed the creative vision with Trevor Sorbie Creative Director, Giuseppe Stelitano and Creative Director Gareth Walker. Understanding the brief was imperative to locating an appropriate venue, suitable crew and equipment to execute the required shots. Once the brief was dissected, we chose a suitable studio located in London with the ability to house two separate video setups. This allowed our crew to shoot simultaneously, creating maximum output of the shoot. Using the client’s mood boards as a reference, we looked to externally hire props and technical lighting setups ahead of the shoot. As the shoot day approached, we coordinated our arrivals on-site with the clients, their external team, crew members and the creative team. To manage our time on-site, our crew loaded in the night before to hit the ground running in the morning. Using an agile team allowed us to seamlessly coordinate the model schedule. Rotating between the two video set-ups; the pulsating lighting set-up and green screen. Managing the shoot environment effectively was important to house the 15+ crew members. This was to ensure everyone had their own space to be creative. From production to showtime A significant part of what made this year’s video content so special was our collaboration with Experience Events who produced the Grand Final show. They provided us with two of the largest screens we have ever worked with. Giving us a vast canvas to play with. The sheer size and scale of these screens allowed us to embrace bolder visuals. Creating an immersive atmosphere that not only complemented the live performances but also elevated the entire event. Photography: David Monteith-Hodge The Creative Challenge: Balancing Vision and Impact Capturing the vision of the show team and translating it into a backdrop for a live performance is no easy feat. The key is to strike a delicate balance—there are moments when the film needs to take centre stage and others where it serves as a complementary element to the live fashion show. Our collaboration with Reuben Armstrong at Reuben and Co and Jon Blanshard at Trago Studios was instrumental in achieving this vision. Together, we created a visual narrative that seamlessly blended with the on-stage action, ensuring a cohesive and impactful experience for the audience. From the initial storyboard sessions to the final edits, every step was taken to enhance the audience’s experience. Conclusion: The Power of Collaboration and Innovation At Clockwise.film, we thrive on opportunities that allow us to innovate and collaborate with other creative visionaries. The L’Oréal Colour Trophy provided just that, a platform to showcase our ability to merge high-level video production with live event artistry. We look forward to continuing to create groundbreaking content. Not only does that support but enhances the world of fashion and live performances.
